What Is the Source of Corruption?

The Source of Corruption is the corrupted Giant Crystal found in the Crystal Clearing area of Hopeforest. It is part of the Episode 2 main story quest, Nullify the Corruption.

At this point in the quest, the game is no longer just asking you to explore Hopeforest. It wants you to find what is spreading corrupted magic through the forest and begin dealing with it directly.

You reach this part after progressing through the earlier Hopeforest story steps.

Before the game sends you toward the Source of Corruption, you should usually have:

Where to Go

The Source of Corruption is in Crystal Clearing, on the eastern side of Hopeforest.

There are usually two ways players describe reaching it.

Route with Woodcutter Level 8

One route uses the shortcut through brambles. This requires Woodcutter level 8.

The general route is:

1. Go toward Stump Clearing.
2. Head east through the connected paths.
3. Cut through the bramble shortcut when the game allows it.
4. Continue through the eastern forest areas.
5. Reach Crystal Clearing.

This is the cleaner route if your Woodcutter level is ready. It also helps because Woodcutter progress is useful later in Hopeforest.

Route without the Woodcutter Shortcut

There is also a longer route that avoids the bramble shortcut. This path sends you around through other Hopeforest areas and may involve more hostile enemies.

This route can work, but it may be rougher if your Scout level or gear is weak.

What You May Need

You do not need to fully finish Nullify the Corruption just to reach the Source of Corruption, but you should prepare before going to Crystal Clearing.

Useful preparation includes:

At Crystal Clearing, Jermais becomes hostile and must be defeated. Some guides list him as a level 12 fight, so do not rush in with very low Scout progress unless you are ready to use healing items or upgraded gear.

After this, the Dryad explains that the Giant Crystal needs magical energy to be cleansed. The first nearby step involves glowing beetles, but the full cleansing process requires more items from around Hopeforest.

Common Problems

I cannot find the Source of Corruption

You are probably looking for a boss or NPC, but the source is the Giant Crystal in Crystal Clearing. The fight with Jermais happens there, but Jermais is not the source itself.

I cannot use the shortcut

If you are blocked by brambles, your Woodcutter level may be too low. The shortcut route is commonly listed as requiring Woodcutter level 8.

Take the longer route or train Woodcutter until you can clear the brambles.

Jermais is too hard

Train Scout, upgrade your weapon or armor, and bring healing potions. You do not need to overlevel massively, but arriving too early can make the fight frustrating.

The beetles did not fully solve it

That is expected. The glowing beetles are only part of the cleansing process. After using them, the quest points you toward other magical sources in Hopeforest.

I am tired of running back and forth

After you reach Crystal Clearing, defeat Jermais, and begin cleansing the Giant Crystal, the quest continues into the larger item-gathering stage.
